In this talk Dr Alex Long will discuss two of ancient philosophy’s most famous images, both from Plato’s Republic: the comparison of goodness to the sun and the description of a prisoner’s release from a murky cave and return to it. If both images are, in some way, about goodness and value, why does Plato make Socrates speak about them so cryptically?
