Current outbreak of COVID-19 – a vivid reminder of, that we are constantly at risk of pandemic outbreaks. Even before that, the threat of new global pandemics had become a serious problem for the West.. The likelihood and impact of future pandemics has been discussed among scientists, working in various fields of medicine – from immunology to virology, epidemiology and veterinary research. Pandemic risk and mitigation planning are increasingly featured in policy discussions and strategies at various levels. Most countries have plans to reduce the risk of a pandemic and are part of global infectious disease surveillance and response networks.

“In this article I discuss, how to use sociological knowledge, along with medical and other knowledge, already mobilized in pandemic planning, can help provide socially sustainable and sustainable solutions in the face of radical uncertainty. The work is based on my research on the social implications of pandemic preparedness.. This leads to the need to consider the possibility of transition to collective crisis management and explores the potential for expanding the landscape of participation before and during crisis events., such as pandemics ".

In this talk Dr Alex Long will discuss two of ancient philosophy’s most famous images, both from Plato’s Republic: the comparison of goodness to the sun and the description of a prisoner’s release from a murky cave and return to it.
